Marriage Counseling

Marriage counseling, also called couples therapy, is a type of therapy that emphasizes improved relationship skills and conflict resolution. Sessions involve both partners, however, the therapist may also wish to see each person separately as well.

Many people seek couples counseling when they are attempting to save their relationship and avoid separation or divorce, but at Northpoint we would love to see you sooner! We will teach you to communicate and be open and honest with each other. We are able to help couples understand why they may be having difficulties in their relationship using Temperament Therapy. When couples understand each other’s God given temperament, they will be well equipped to meet each others needs in an appropriate and loving way.

Changes in the relationship will come when both spouses are committed to working and attending sessions. Communicating effectively takes practice and a great deal of effort. Without healthy communication, it is nearly impossible to resolve conflicts or grow your marital
relationship.

You may need only a few sessions to help you weather a crisis, or you may need marriage counseling for several months, particularly if your relationship has greatly deteriorated. As with individual therapy, you typically see a marriage counselor once a week.

Most marriages and other relationships aren’t perfect. Each person brings his or her own ideas, values, opinions and personal history into a relationship, and they don’t always match their partner’s. Differences or habits that you once found endearing may grate on your nerves after time together. Sometimes specific issues, such as an extramarital affair or loss of sexual attraction, trigger problems in a relationship. Other times, there’s a gradual disintegration of communication and caring.

No matter the cause, distress in a relationship can create undue stress, tension, sadness, worry, fear and other problems. You may hope your relationship troubles just go away on their own. But left to fester, a bad relationship will likely worsen and eventually lead to physical or psychological problems, such as depression.
